Is Circumcision Covered by OHIP in Ontario?

Is newborn circumcision covered by OHIP? No, routine newborn circumcision is considered an elective procedure in Ontario and is not covered by OHIP. Families pay for the procedure out of pocket.

OHIP coverage

Why isn't it covered?

OHIP covers procedures that are medically necessary. Routine newborn circumcision chosen for cultural, religious, or preventive-health reasons is classified as elective, so the cost falls to families. This is the same across Ontario regardless of which clinic or hospital performs the procedure.

When does OHIP cover circumcision?

If your child develops a medical indication for circumcision later in life, the cost of the procedure is covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). It is important to note that 1 in 100 uncircumcised adults may require circumcision for medical reasons later in life; these delayed circumcisions represent a more involved surgical procedure, often performed with general or regional anesthesia.

Payment & receipts

Payment & receipts
Payment Methods

We accept cash, Visa debit (must have cvv code), and all major credit cards, as well as popular digital wallets such as Apple Pay.

When Payment Is Taken

You have the option to pay at the time of booking, or any time before your appointment via the payment link included in your confirmation email. Payment is required before the procedure. If you haven't paid in advance, we will collect payment before the procedure begins.

Receipts for Insurance / Health Spending Accounts

We issue receipts for all payments and can customize them to meet the requirements of specific insurers or health spending accounts upon request.

Refunds

If payment has been made but the procedure does not go ahead — for example, if you arrive for your appointment having already paid, but the doctor examines your child and determines it isn't safe to proceed — we provide a full refund.

Deposits & Cancellations

We do not require a deposit or charge a cancellation fee. We ask that families contact the clinic as early as possible if they need to cancel, so we can offer the appointment slot to another patient.

Follow-Up Care

If your child requires any additional virtual or in-person appointments after the procedure, we will never ask for out-of-pocket payment for that follow-up care. Where appropriate, we may submit related fees to OHIP.
